All On X Dental Implants Procedure Overview

What to expect

Making the choice to proceed with oral surgery for All-On-X (AOX) Implant Supported Full Arch Bridges (hybrid prosthesis) is a big and exciting decision – one that requires input from you, the Oral Surgeon, and the Restorative Dentist. It also involves a lot of careful planning and preparation. Here is some information to help you along the way:

Before Surgery

After your initial consultation with our office discussing All-On-X Implant Supported Full Arch Bridges and the surgery involved, we will schedule an appointment for you to meet with our Restorative Dentist. This is the dentist who will assist you with your later on-going care regarding your new hybrid prosthesis.

You will discuss/complete the following with our Restorative Dentist:

  • Their input on the proposed treatment plan
  • Take Records (x-rays, scans, photos, etc.) (if you are currently using a denture, please try to avoid adding any sticky adhesives prior to taking records, as this can affect the quality and/or accuracy of your scans)

Please keep in mind that this may mean more than one visit. There will be a $1,000.00 deposit prior to taking records, which will be credited toward your AOX surgery.

  • We will be sending a Medical Clearance to your physician. Please ensure that we have the correct Medical Doctor on file. The Medical Clearance should be completed within 30 days of your AOX surgery date.
  • You will also receive a copy of the Medical Clearance we are sending. To ensure it is completed and returned to us at least 2 weeks prior to your surgery, please bring your copy to their office as well, and follow through. Your physician may require a visit to their office before approving the Medical Clearance.

Once you have met with our Restorative Dentist, we will have you return to our office for a Second Consult, when we will:

  • Confirm the treatment plan agreed upon with our Restorative Dentist
  • Collect payment for surgery
  • Review any instructions indicated on your completed Medical Clearance
  • Review post-operative instructions
  • Arrange prescriptions for you to pick up 1 week ahead of your surgery

Day of Surgery

Part of your AOX surgery involves anesthesia. For your comfort, this will be done with Mild Sedation. Please ensure the following:

  • Come fasting for eight (8) hours prior to surgery (nothing to eat or drink, not even water! The only exception is a small sip of water to take any needed medications)
  • Arrange for a driver to be available to take you home
  • Wear comfortable and loose clothing (avoid long sleeves and dresses)
  • Do not wear make-up, manicured nails, jewelry, or contact lenses the day of surgery. Leave valuables at home.

How long your appointment will last varies. For a single arch (either upper or lower jaw) this could mean a 3-4 hour appointment. For two arches (both upper and lower jaw) this could mean a 5-6 hour appointment. However, please keep in mind that this is only an estimated amount of time, and your actual appointment could be different! Our office will keep your ride updated on your status.

After Surgery

It is vital that you do your part to help ensure the success of your new dental implants. Here is a brief list of restrictions to follow:

  • NO-CHEW Diet for 6 weeks after surgery! If your teeth have to come together to eat something, avoid it, even if you consider it to be a “soft food.” Some suggestions: Blenderized foods with the consistency of baby food, protein shakes, anything that can just be put in mouth and swallowed without chewing.
  • No smoking or vaping.
  • No excessive drinking. If you are taking medications, please remember to avoid consuming alcohol. Also, the no carbonated beverages rule for one week after surgery includes avoiding beer.

There will be a series of follow-up appointments to check on your healing process:

  • 1 Week after Surgery – Return to our office
  • 1 and 2 Months after Surgery – Visit with our Restorative dentist
    – These appointments may involve adjusting your temporary hybrid prosthesis or removing and seating a new temporary hybrid prosthesis.
    – These appointments may also include updating your records by taking new scans.
  • 3 Months after Surgery – Visit with our Restorative dentist
    – At this appointment, we will determine if you are ready for your final hybrid prosthesis. If so, we will again update your records with new scans, which will be used for the ordering and fabrication of your final hybrid prosthesis.
  • 4 Months after Surgery – Visit with our Restorative dentist
    – At this appointment, you will receive your final hybrid prosthesis.

Keep an open mind. You will be leaving our office with a fixed temporary full arch bridge that will likely take some time to get used to. Please remember that this is a temporary trial hybrid prosthesis, and that the permanent final hybrid prosthesis you will eventually receive after healing will feel sleeker and sturdier.

Due to the nature of the temporary trial hybrid prosthesis, it is necessary for there to be some bulk. Also, take note of what you do and do not like about your temporary hybrid prosthesis, and let our Restorative Dentist know your feelings – these can be taken into consideration when designing your final bridge. Please remember that once your final hybrid prosthesis is made, no further changes can be made.

Please follow your post-operative instructions carefully. You will leave our office with a comprehensive list of instructions to follow. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to get in contact with our office.

Long Term Future

Regular check-ups with our Restorative Dentist will be important. Please remember that you will need to be responsible for making sure you are able to visit their office routinely in order for them to help make sure your implants are healthy. This may or may not include removing the fixed hybrid prosthesis briefly while in-office. It will be important to discuss their plan to work with you on this.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
